The Federal\nNeuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City on Thursday, 30th<\/sup>\nAugust, 2018 began a collaborative relationship with the World Health\nOrganization (WHO), Benin City, Edo State, on infection control and disease\nsurveillance & notification. This took place during the visit of the World\nHealth Organization (WHO), Benin City to the hospital. The WHO delegation\nincluded Mrs. Faith Ireye<\/strong> (State\nCoordinator),<\/strong> Chief (Mrs.) Winnie Aigbojie (<\/strong>Cluster Consultant), Dr. Andrew Obi<\/strong> (Epidemiologist &\nPublic Health Consultant, Centre for Disease Control, University of Benin\nTeaching Hospital, Benin City), Mr.\nSamuel Akele (<\/strong>Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) Egor\nLocal Government Area and Miss. Imade\nOnaiho; (<\/strong>Assistant DSNO Egor Local Government Area).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WHO State Coordinator,\nMrs. Faith Ireye<\/strong> during her visit to\nthe hospital commended the hospital management for their commitment to\ninfection control and prevention. She intimated the Medical Director of efforts\nby WHO at preventing transmission of nosocomial infections and eradication of\nother priority diseases like acute flaccid paralysis, yellow fever etc. Mrs. Faith Ireye <\/strong>also confirmed their\ninterest and readiness to collaborate with the hospital in building capacity\nand providing required materials to ensure safe and hygienic mental health and\nmedical services delivery in the hospital. The Medical Director; Dr. Sunday Olotu <\/strong>in his response\nappreciated the WHO for accepting to collaborate with the hospital and promised\nthat the hospital\u2019s management will not relent in ensuring safe and hygienic\nhealth service delivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was marked by\nlectures on disease surveillance and notification and infection control\ndelivered by Chief (Mrs.) Winnie\nAigbojie<\/strong> (Cluster Consultant, WHO, Benin City) and Dr. Andrew Obi<\/strong> (Consultant, Public Health Physician, Centre for\nDisease Control, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City)\nrespectively. Members of the Infection Control and Prevention Committee of the\nhospital, Doctors, Nurses and other members of staff were in attendance at the\nlectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Obi in his lecture\nreiterated that nosocomial or hospital acquired infections (HAIs) significantly\nincrease morbidity and mortality in healthcare systems and contributes\nsignificantly to increased economic burden, hence the need for cost-effective guidelines\nfor infection control in healthcare facilities. He stressed that the simple act\nof handwashing with soap and water will help curb the spread of nosocomial\ninfections. Other preventive measures include use of personal protective\nequipment (PPE), proper hospital waste disposal, proper cough and respiratory\netiquette and environmental cleaning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
